In the past our main exports were, tea, rubber, and coconut. Since recently this situation has changed considerably.
The situation with regard to our tea exports is a matter for consideration. We could do better in this sphere. We should export more and more tea. We should locate more and more marketing facilities for our tea.
The export of garments is another important factor to be considered. Our garments should have the internationally accepted standards and the quality. We should concentrate on the quality as well as on the quantity. Thereby we would be able to compete with any country.
Performance in exports of gems and jwellery leaves much to be considered. We should improve our standards in the finishing of these items so as to compete with other countries especially with Thailand. As this country too is in the forefront of this business, we must set targets and make certain that they are achieved.
Sri Lanka should become a leading exporting nation. If we do not achieve this goal our desire to become one of the newly industrialized countries would be unduly delayed.
