LET’S LEAD A RELIGIOUS LIFE

June 21, 2008

There are four main religions in the world. They are the Buddhism, the Christianity, the lslam and the Hinduism. The teachings of all these religions are similar to a certain extent. Misdeeds are not approved by any religion.

Lord Buddha taught us about the value of humanity. If we observe the teachings of Lord Buddha we will never fall into trouble. Today there is a social segregation in our society. We are separated as Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and so on. Some people think that they are superior to others and they are more powerful than others. This is the main reason that paved the way to the ongoing war in the North and East. We should always keep in mind that everybody likes to lead a happy and peaceful life. Everybody fears the death and torture.

Today there is a great competition among the people in our society. Most of the people do not pay any attention towards the development of their mind. They always try to earn money by some means. They do not have any leisure. But Lord Buddha taught us that ” Contentment is bliss” We should always try to be content with what we get. Then only we will be able to lead a happy life. It is said that man is the cleverest animal. We should not tell lies. We should not take to liquor. We should not kill animals. We should refrain from such sinful deeds.

According to the Buddhism taking revenge is a sinful deed. “Nahi verena verani” anger or hatred cannot be dispelled by anger” we should show kindness even to animals. We should always try to purify our thoughts. We should not try to escape from the problems. We should face them with courage. Today moral values are declining in our society. So the Lord Buddha’s teachings are very suitable to modern society that is plagued with various problems.

Dr. C.W.W.  Kannangara is regarded as the Father of Free Education in Sri Lanka.

Christopher William Wijekoon kannangara wasborn on October 13,1889 at Randombe, a suburb of Ambalngoda. His father was John Daniel Wijekoon and his mother was Emaly Wijesinghe.

He had his primary education at Wesleyan High School, Ambalangoda and then he had his secondary education at Richmond College, Galle as a free scholar.

Dr. Kannangara was an eminent Sri Lankan educationist who rendered a great service for the development who rendered a great service for the development who rendered a great service for the development of education. He brought about several reforms in education. He brought about several reforms in education. He became the Minister of Education in the Legislative Council in 1923. He realized that the existing education system was not suitable to fulfill the needs of the society. He wanted to make some amendments in the system. In order to achieve this objective, he submitted an Education Reform Bill in 1938.

He saw  that the society was divided into two group under the then education system, as the English educated and vernacular educated. He wanted to give an equal education to all irrespective of wealth or other reasons. The concept of Central Colleges was Dr. Kannangara’s greatest contribution to the development of education. The first Central Colleges set up under this programme were at Minuwangoda, Veyangoda, Akuramboda, Matugama, Weeraketiya, Kattamkudy, Ibbagamuwa, Dickwella and Marathugoda. By 1944 there were 22 central Colleges. This number was increased up to 50 by 1946. He is a national hero who paved the way to both urban and rural children to receive free education.

Dr. Kannangara also realized that some people could not afford to send their children to schools because of the poverty. In order to overcome this problem, he introduced a system of scholarships. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dr. Kannangara, the Father of Free Education.

AVLUE OF TREES.

June 8, 2008

Trees are an integral part of our environment. Both man and the animals cannot survive without trees.

We get food, medicine, wood and shelter from trees. Trees beautify the environment. We get the most needed rain because of the trees. Trees have a great influence upon climate. Trees preserve moisture. The leaves of a tree are always giving off moisture and this constant evaporation cools the surrounding atmosphere. Trees on hill sided stop the soil erosion and prevent destructive earth slips. The soil becomes fertile because of the trees.

We know that plants existed on earth before human beings. This fact proves that trees do not need man for their existence. But man cannot exist without trees.

Trees produce oxygen which is essential for life. Trees purify the air by taking in carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen. Some people have not realized the value of trees. They down trees for their needs. Sometimes we need to cut down trees. But we should plant another tree in that place. If we cut down trees in this manner, our country will become a desert before long.

The government has set up a separate department called “Forest conservation department” in order to protect our jungle resources. The department alone cannot stop the felling of trees. Everybody should extend his or her co-operation towards the department in this connection.

The extent of forest cover is Sri Lanka has been reduced drastically during the past two decades. This situation has been arisen due to several reasons. Vast stretches of jungles are cleared for development projects. Some forest reserves have become barren lands due to illegal felling of trees. As a result of this almost all the water fountains have been dried up.

Re-afforestation programmers are implemented by the Forest conservation department annually with the assistance of several non-governmental organizations. Various kinds of valuable plants are distributed free of charge. Seminars and workshops are conducted on forest conservation.

We should realize at least now the value of trees and try to preserve them.

VALUE OF SPORTS

June 1, 2008

Every child likes to play. Not only the able bodied but also disabled are fond of sports.

Sports play an important role in child’s life. It is said that a healthy mind can be found only in a healthy body. Sports develop not only the child’s physical faculty but also his mental faculty.

There are various kinds of sports in our country. Some of them are cricket, volley ball, foot boll, net boll, rugger, elle, tennis, badminton, swimming, squash and hockey. Among them, cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka.

In the past sports were not given a priority in our schools. Sports were directly introduced as extra curricular activities. But today the education authorities have realized that sport is an integral part of education.

Exercises have to be done regularly for the proper functioning and development of our body. If a person is engaged in sports continuously, he or she can lead a healthy life. In schools we find some students who look weak and pale. They are the students who never take part in sports.

Sports also teach us good moral values. We can learn good qualities and good attitudes of persons. A good sportsman can take both victory and defeat alike. He is very patient. He accepts any decision without grumbling. He is well disciplined and well mannered. Also he is ready to accept any challenge at any time. Sports teach us leadership qualities and the feeling of work as a team.

Volley ball is the National sport in Sri Lanka. But it is not so popular as cricket today. The government has taken several steps to improve sports. There is a separate Ministry and there is a Minister in charge of sports. Sport clubs have been established throughout the island. Sport equipment is issued by the Ministry to these clubs free of charge.

In the present day society our children have no time to engage in sports. Most of them go for tuition classes or for films. This is a very sad state of affairs. In my opinion sports must be made compulsory in our schools. Parents should realize that a sport too is a part of education. The children should be encouraged to engage in sports too. Otherwise our future generation will be weak and lethargic.

In a recent survey conducted by the World Tourism organization it has been revealed that promotion of sports activities will lead to the promotion of tourist destinations. Several countries in Europe are now using the field of sports for promoting bilateral tourism.
