The monsoon rains

Sri Lanka is a small is I land the Indian Ocean. It is situated close to equator. There for Sri Lanka has a good climate. Through out the twelve month of the year we get sunshine. As well as we get seasonal rains. So mainly it brings rains from North East and South western to all part of this is land. There for Sri Lanka is a agricultural country. Especially we get south western rains from May to September. The rains get to the wet zone of Sri Lanka from this season. The North East monsoon comes from January April using these rains the agricultural industry is done in the dry zone. Apart from this the internal monsoon rains comes from March- April and the cyclone prone rains comes from June to July of December the beginning of December. As we get often rains through out the year no droughts occur in Sri Lanka.

Gem Industry in Sri Lanka

There is a wide variety of gems in Sri Lanka. Out of those the followers gems one considered as major varieties.
Blue Saphire
Red Saphire
Yellow Saphire
Cat’s eye

Blue Saphire
 It is a very dark blue glossy gem. It is found easily in Ratnapura area. Some of them are very high in value. Gem merchants buy them at various prices depending on the size.

                                                                                                                       

Red Saphire
 It is a very colorful bright gem. Hatton and Bagawanthalawa are famous places for them. There fore land value in this area has gone up in price. Local merchants as well as foreign buyers travel to this area to buy gems.

   

Yellow Saphire
 This variety of gems is mostly found in Balangoda, Aluthnuwara, Diyawinna and Okkamptiya areas. Specially in Aluthnuware area mining land value is very high as most of the gems found in them are yellow Saphire.

Cat’s eye
 This variety is different from the other gems. There is a shiners line moving from side to side. This is a very high priced gem and it is found in the Ratnapura area.

Village for solders at Galgoda

Their are 17 numbers of families living in this village and it is situated at Balangoda Pradesiya sabha division. The above Pradeshiya Shaba division distributed some crown lands for some selected disabled solders.
 Tue total number of elected solders for the village is 24 nos. some hawses are completed and other are under construction. This village is now calls ‘upload Ranaviru village’
 The main problem for this village is lock of water. Currently due to lock of water the construction work of some house are stopped.
 The electricity supply for the village is yet to be done. The aceen road for the village is now under construction. This village is situated on a beautiful mountaintop.

Landslide and Mahawalathnna old road.

  This area calls Galgoda village. There is a Jungle ad going to this village. In the middle of Jungle on top of the mount an there is a natural tank. The water source for the tank is rain. After rainy season there will be water in the tank for around 06 months.  

                   

The landslide occurred in the mount an sliding a huge man of soil and rock bolder and distroy the connecting road of Galgoda and Mahawalathnna. This occurred in the year of 1948 the damage wan limited only to road and some paddy land and no any detu was recorded. This wans mainly due to less number of houses and people in than auea during tnat time. The noted Placer in Mahawalathnna were the temple and old house of Ms. Sirimao Bandaranayaka  (first women priminister of the world.)

 The main reason for this landslide is named to be the tank on top of the mount an it cawed leakage of water trough loosened soil strata’s in the mountain this become worse with the highst recorded rain for around 20 years.    

 The slide is still visible and some photos one linked hereto. The derbies of slide still can be seen.

 

 I learnt this story from Mr. B.V. Dayarathna and his wife Mrs. T.S. Dingirimanike who wane Living near this village in that era.
